Washington County Supervisor, Bill Meyers, has created a new website that lends transparency to County Board meetings, County Budget, Salaries, and more. Meyers has been a hard-working, people-oriented, conservative worker for the county. This is just one more way for him to help people become connected with the government in their community.

Four years ago, when I first ran for the County Board, transparency in government was one of my key issues. I have worked very hard to force county government to share information and started a website several years ago just for that purpose.

I just launched a new website, http://www.CountySupervisorBill.com to focus more on current issues and respond better to constituents’ questions.

Susan G. Komen wises up - Dumps Planned Parenthood

Wise. Very wise. The tarnished reputation of Susan G. Komen Foundation has received the beginning stages of restoration with this move.

The nation's leading breast-cancer charity, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, is halting its partnerships with Planned Parenthood affiliates — creating a bitter rift, linked to the abortion debate, between two iconic organizations that have assisted millions of women.

Komen spokeswoman Leslie Aun said the cutoff results from the charity's newly adopted criteria barring grants to organizations that are under investigation by local, state or federal authorities. According to Komen, this applies to Planned Parenthood because it's the focus of an inquiry launched by Rep. Cliff Stearns, R-Fla., seeking to determine whether public money was improperly spent on abortions.

There is a quote by Planned Parenthood's President, Cecile Richards, in which she stated "
"It's hard to understand how an organization with whom we share a mission of saving women's lives...."

Really? How can you claim to be saving women's lives when all along you kill them in your 800+ Murder Marts? I know it hurts, PP, but at least you and your advocates, employees, and abortionists are still alive, right? There's always a bright side, I say.

"The filing deadline for local elections was yesterday. Here’re my quick takes on my local governments:

City of West Bend

All of the odd numbered districts are up this year. Districts 1, 3, and 5 have incumbents running unopposed. District 1 is conservative Tony Turner. District 3 is conservative Ed Duquaine. District 5 is moderate/liberal Alan Carter.

District 7’s incumbent was a liberal and she chose not to run for reelection. Running for the seat is a single candidate, Adam Williquette. Adam is a conservative.

So… the West Bend Common Council was a majority liberal/moderate board a few years ago with a liberalish mayor. Now 6 of the 8 seats and the mayor’s seat will be held by staunch conservatives. Not bad… not bad…

West Bend School Board

This slate is pretty disappointing. There are two seats up for election. One is currently held by a conservative, Tim Stepanski. The other is held by a liberal, Kris Beaver. Stepanski has chosen not to run for reelection. Beaver is.

Besides Beaver, three other candidates have filed to run. Carl Knepel is a younger guy who professes conservatism, but doesn’t have any track record. Therese Sizer is a staff attorney at West Bend Mutual and former teacher. I don’t know much about her except that she doesn’t travel in local conservative circles. The final candidate is Vinney Pheng. He ran last year and lost in the primary. He’s a solid conservative.

In this recent article in the West Bend Daily News (you'll have to scroll all the way down to the bottom for the article), United Way received a glowing report, encouraging local Washington County residents to give, give, give. Many, if not most, of the organizations supported by United Way are reputable and trustworthy. However, let's shed some light on reality.

United Way supports PLANNED PARENTHOOD. Click HERE if you don't believe me. Nationally, in 2008, United Way contributed an estimated $1.9 million to Planned Parenthood. Additionally, United Way donations to local charities refer women to family planning services that include abortion. The national United Way website (www.LiveUnited.org) also directs volunteers toward Planned Parenthood. While not every state/agency, or Washington County for that matter, promotes Planned Parenthood, many do. One is too many.

This Christmas season, let's not contribute to killing babies. I think it's in poor taste.

Yes, yes, I know that you can choose to "designate" where your donation goes according to whom you wish to support. However, don't be fooled. That option is a misnomer. If you "designate" to a specific charity, that just means less of the UNdesignated funds will go to that charity.

In addition, United Way will take some off the top for overhead, meaning LESS goes to the charity.

SOLUTION = Give DIRECTLY to the charity of your choice. Nobody needs a middleman to help us send a check.

Remember, too, that "time is money." If you can't afford to give, maybe dropping in at the location of your favorite charity and lending a hand would be a great option for you, and a blessing to them!

Walker Administration Holding Hoodlums Accountable for Mess

Today we had some disturbing news as we find that the Lakeland Union School District Administrator Todd Kleinhans has condoned the presence of Recall Walker petitioners on public school property over the weekend. Saturday there was an event sponsored by the Latin Club, a craft show. Recall Walker petitioners took the liberty of positioning themselves outside the entrance of the event.

The administrator has stated that “Any group has a right to peacefully assemble on public property”.

I would agree. Though I am certain that during our recent recall process we never would have been given the OK to set up a table out the doors of this school as the Recall Walker were granted.

If you believe school property is not an appropriate place for political agendas, please call Administrator Kleinhans today and share your views.

Bill to Require Notarization on Recall Petitions Introduced

I think this is an appropriate move. As we witness a statewide recall effort based on the simple "dislike" of the current governor, this is another measure that will help to keep things on the up and up.

WITI-TV, GREENFIELD—
Democrats say enthusiasm remains high in the effort to collect 540,000 valid signatures to force a recall election against Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker. Republicanssay they've been alerted to multiple instances of misconduct and fraud, and one Republican senator says he will reintroduce a bill requiring recall petitions to be notarized.

State Senator Glenn Grothman (R-West Bend) says requiring notarization is an extra step in reducing fraud and misconduct in the signature-gathering process. Republicans are also downplaying the recall efforts. "There have been a lot of numbers thrown around by Democratic activists who are pushing for this recall. We view these numbers as dubious because there have been multiple instances of recall fraud," Ben Sparks, Communications Director with the Republican Party of Wisconsin said.

I had my first opportunity to get over to the new Sendik's Food Market in West Bend today. If you haven't been there yet, you're in for a treat. The store is arranged in traditional Sendik's style with a vast array of perfect produce that pleases the eye from the moment you begin the walk through the store. Dried fruits, nuts, chocolates, all neatly stacked with an outrageous plethora of selections. The staff is extremely courteous and friendly, whether it's someone who is stocking products or serving behind the meat/bakery counters, checking out, bagging...

Here is what I noticed most profoundy...it was like going to a party. The countenance of the employees was catching in a most festive manner. Couples, families and friends were chatting and laughing in nearly every aisle. It was what one could document as a "warm and fuzzy" experience. :-)

Now, for the secret....

From time to time I am known to drop in on the Sendik's in Germantown to get a glob of their homemade pizza dough. Actually, it's not Sendik's per se, it's made by Sciortino's Bakery in Milwaukee, and the stuff is phenomenally mouth-pleasing. I normally make all my own yeast breads, doughs, rolls, etc. I seldom stray from anything short of scratch bakery. This is the one exception, and rightfully so. I cannot make a better pizza crust. Simple as that. I believe this dough is made with a high-gluten flour. The flavor, texture and eye appeal all add up, and the price is right, too, at $1.97 for one crust that makes an 18"-20" diameter pizza. I'm adding a picture of what was left of our lunch today. This crust is so easy to work with. Just lightly grease your pizza pan with shortening (Crisco; not oil, and not cooking spray). Gently stretch the dough, then lay flat on pan and work it to the edges with your fingers. It's extremely pliable and I have never torn a single crust. Spread on your favorite sauce, toppings and cheese... Bake at 400 until golden.

You'll find the secret pizza crust near the Bakery in the cooler where the cakes are stored, bottom left shelf.... shhhh!!!!

TRIED SOMETHING NEW:

Sendik's had out a sample of their own recipe of "Vidalia Onion Summer Tomato Salad Dressing." No MSG, low in sugar, 0 fat, 40 calories per 2 Tbsp, superior flavor. Yep. I bought it.

Sendik's has already gotten off to a great start in West Bend (click and scroll down to "Rain Gardens Lauded"). It's easy to ascertain why.

Ousted Library Board President, Barb Deters, Stumbles Through Weak Presentation

Two weekends ago, Barbara Deters, former library board president, gave a power point presentation regarding the 2009 library issue at the UW-Milwaukee School of Informational Studies (liberal librarian school). Amidst outright lies that were told, Deters mentions her fear of the new members of the library board and city council.

Listen to the entire video to hear how she ridicules our City Council, slams the citizens/families of West Bend, snarks about Christians, and lies about a number of issues. Revealing his true colors, former library board director, Michael Tyree, weighed in during Q&A at the end.

As Deters mangles her way through this presentation, she disturbingly appears to be speaking as a direct representative of the West Bend Community Memorial Library, or at least she would like others to think so.

Interestingly, Deters states she was "forced" to retire from her position within our school district. I have confirmed that this, indeed, is a lie. Nobody forced her to retire.

41:06 (Open mouth, insert foot.) Deters finds it amusing that Net Nanny restricts access to my personal blog because it contains "pornographic material." The material in question are direct quotes from various books we were challenging for the very same thing - pornographic material. Though Deters denies the passages in the books as pornographic, she notes that my blog is, indeed, blocked from Net Nanny for what is deemed pornography. :-)

PFOX (Parents and Friends of Gays and Ex-Gays)

22:16 Deters mocks our request for balanced literature on the gay lifestyle. States "not one of the books" on the PFOX website has "ever been reviewed by a reputable source" and that they are "poorly written," and that this is the reason they hadn't been purchased for our library. (PFOX offered to donate a book(s) in order to assist in lending a balanced viewpoint regarding homosexuality to young adults. This offer was rejected by Deters and her clan in 2009, confirming what we had stated from the very beginning - one viewpoint only.)

Deters conveniently leaves out that the organization, PFOX, is Parents and Friends of Ex-gays and Gays. She lends heavy bias to her belief that homosexuals cannot change their behavior while attacking PFOX's mission to lend assistance to those choosing to leave the homosexual lifestyle.

SCHLAFLY/EAGLE FORUM

Words worth heeding. Conservatives, do your part.

As I’m sure you are aware, the attempt by liberals to recall Governor Walker begins tomorrow. It is an utterly misguided effort. Read my column tomorrow for some more thoughts on that. But as a conservative guy in Wisconsin who supports Scott Walker and the direction he is leading this state, here’s what I plan to do and suggest y’all might consider doing it too.
1) Record and report.
A recall drive is a public activity and participants are generally working in a public setting. I will take pictures, record conversations, take videos, and publicize it all. I hope that the folks are on their best behavior, because a lot of us will be watching. In fact, the Republican Party has set up a website to collect all of these reports. You can find it at Recall Integrity Center.
2) Power of the purse.
Just like the recall employees/volunteers, everyone who signs a recall petition is signing a public document. I’ll be looking at those names and making them public - especially for people in my neck of the woods. If you sign the petition and happen to own or run a local business, you can expect me to publicize that fact and decline to spend any more of my hard earned dollars with your establishment. After all, if you get your way I will need those dollars to pay my taxes.
3) Explain yourself.
As a close follower of the issues, I am well-equipped to debate the recall effort, the motivations, and the consequences. If you come to my door or approach me in public, you can expect a lengthy debate. I don’t really care if I convince you the error of your ways, but the longer you are talking to me, the less time you are spending collecting signatures. If you get frustrated and storm off in a huff, I’ll enjoy posting the video/audio. Heck, even if you don’t, it will be fun to highlight your lame arguments.
4) Show ID.
Every recall petition must be signed by the person circulating it. As such, anyone signing it has a responsibility to verify the identity of the circulator to make sure it’s on the up and up. Washington County Board held a rare evening meeting to approved County's $118 million budget. When Supervisor Mark McCune tried to introduce his $1,000,000 budget cut amendment, County Board Chairman Herbert Tennies found McCune out of order refusing to let him speak.

 The Chairman then refused to allow an amendment citing HIS authority to make up rules. A motion was made to allow the Board to vote on the Chairman's decision. Supervisor William Meyers, Richfield said, "The U.S. Constitution Article 1, Section VIII established the rule of law over the rule of any man. You don't get to just make up the rules, Mr. Chairman." To which the Chairman responded, "Yes, I do!"  19 of the 30 Supervisors agreed and voted in favor of the Chairman, making Washington County the first Hugo Chavez-style republic in Wisconsin. With this vote, the narrative of a functioning democracy is no longer allowed. Under Tennies, Washington County now will only allow dissent so long as those dissenters agree with the Chairman.  Supervisor Mike Bassill, West Bend said, "This action sets a dangerous precedent for the future." One Supervisor, who asked to remain unnamed, stated, "Meyers is the real problem here. As we watch the antics of the Occupy groups, the pattern is clear; these are the "slobs" of the nation. They set no precedent for integrity. The attention they draw to themselves is not one of a political nature; it is one that breeds disgust, disrespect for others, and overall sleeziness that only attracts others like themselves. If they had a cause, it's been lost on the distraction of their overall disturbing behavior. Good luck with that.

City officials temporarily denied Occupy Madison a new street use permit Wednesday after protesters violated public health and safety conditions and failed to follow the correct processes to renew or amend a permit.
The permit, which expired Wednesday at noon, required Occupy Madison protesters to relocate from their current space at 30 West Mifflin Street, also called 30 on the Square.
A neighboring hotel's staff alleged voiced concerns about having to recently escort hotel employees to and from bus stops late at night due to inappropriate behavior, such as public masturbation, from street protesters.
In addition, officials agreed further occupation should not be allowed to continue without restrooms on site to avoid further public health violations.

Washington County Budget Proposal On Line

Washington County Supervisor Mark McCune, Erin, a long time advocate of smaller government, has requested a levy reduction for 2012 of $1,000,000. McCune said, "I have gone on record several times outlining my belief that Government needs to shrink going forward, and I believe the County should start this next year with my proposed reductions."

A spokesperson for W-C3, Washington County Conservative Citizens, when asked for a comment on the proposed cuts, said he had not seen the specifics but "for 2011 Washington County has a $2.85 per thousand tax rate compared to Waukesha County is at $1.97 and Ozaukee County is at $1.74. $2,000,000 would be better."

This has been a year of historic change in Wisconsin. Facing a $3.6 Billion deficit, Governor Scott Walker and state lawmakers got to work making the hard decisions to get the state's finances back on track. Their reforms gave local governments and school districts the tools they so badly needed to balance their own budgets without raising taxes.
Change is hard. As one school board member and small business owner recently told us, "It's not easy doing what you think is right."

Baby Killing Suspended Indefinitely in Rockford

As breaking news shows, things aren't so safe and legal at the abortion mill in Rockford, Illinois. According to the suspension notice released by the Illinois Department of Public Health on September 30, 2011, “the department had found conditions at the facility that are a direct threat to the public interest, health, safety and welfare requiring immediate, emergency action.”

For folks that might not be aware, this stateline abortuary operates out of a multi-story abandoned old brick school. Tens of thousands of innocent children (including many Wisconsinites) have lost their lives at this facility.

MANY Wisconsin teenagers travel over the Wisconsin-Illinois border to have abortions to avoid Wisconsin's parental consent laws. In fact, the abortion mill referenced below has ads in the Yellow Pages of at least one stateline phonebook that highlights: * No Parental Consent, * No 24-Hour Waiting Period
ROCKFORD — The Illinois Department of Public Health has suspended the operating license for the Rockford abortion clinic.

The reasons for the suspension are outlined in a three-page notice, dated Sept. 29 and signed by Damon T. Arnold, the director of the state department.

According to the notice, the department “found conditions at (the Northern Illinois Women’s Center) that are directly threatening to the public interest, health, safety and welfare requiring immediate, emergency action.”

The community will be asked to approve the highest allowable levy at the 92nd annual meeting of the electors Monday.

West Bend School District voters will be asked to authorize the School Board to levy $37.4 million.

The tax levy proposed is $458,566 less than last year, according to Superintendent Ted Neitzke.

The mill rate will depend upon property values, which won’t be known until the middle or end of next month.

If property values stay the same, the mill rate will not increase. However, if property values drop, the district is anticipating an increase of about 7 cents per $1,000 of assessed value.

“At the end of the day, we are asking everybody for less money than we did last year,” said Neitzke. “We can’t control what will happen with the mill rate, and we can’t spend any more. So if you want the schools to do more and tax more we can’t. And if you want the district to reduce more, we did.”

Residents will be asked to stand to vote in favor of four resolutions: the tax levy, the disposal of district property, board member compensation, and the 2012-13 annual meeting date.

Eligible voters will also be able to speak to the proposed resolutions for up to two minutes.

A recording I made of an author essentially admitting that the American Library Association's [ALA] Top 10 challenged list is faked and used to promote a political agenda has become the subject of an exclusive, top billed report on WorldNetDaily:

Might the ALA have faked #1, And Tango Makes Three, also about the same "big deal"? Well, it was challenged only four times yet it is supposedly #1. We are talking about an organization that used plagiarism to promote Banned Books Week, after all.

Parental Power Struggle in West Bend - Who's REALLY In Charge?

The policy committee met last night. The following items were on the agenda:

Review of process for policy revision and Review of the following:

a. Policy 370 – Co-curricular Activities

b. Policy 333 – District Programs/Activities

I sensed a bit of a power struggle in the policy meeting.

I’ve always thought that the administration resented policies made by the board, and they often wrote “administrative rules” to undermine board authority. The discussion that followed confirmed my initial thought.

Dave Weigand, policy committee chair, requested a review of policy 370-District Programs/Activities. He requested, among other things, to have the policy state that written parental permission be obtained yearly for students in each club they participate. His intent is to give parents information on the clubs and obtain parental permission for clubs specific for each co-curricular athletic or non-athletic club. “It’s important for parental permission to participate, “ Weigand stated.

Valley Elliehausen, from administration, stated she, “wouldn’t advocate for a parental permission” policy for clubs. Further, she said that the district uses a Code of Conduct and students and parents sign it for clubs. Weigand, fighting for parental rights, continued to advocate for parents, stating he would like to see parental permission in district policy. Valley then said parental permission could be part of an administrative rule, but would not agree it should be district policy.

Weigand also requested the policy state that the elected school board review all clubs (every level) yearly in order to gage interest and participation, etc. Valley again stated that the administration, and not the board, reviews clubs, “That’s our role” she stated. Al Pauli added that the school principals at the middle school level review clubs. The discussion went on to reveal that the only time the board hears about clubs is when cuts are being made due to “budget constraints” and/or non-interest.

That leads me to wonder why the GSA was brought before the school board last spring and summer.

Valley began the policy meeting by letting the board know that the administration will be making a schedule of policies to be reviewed and anytime an administrator comes forward with a policy they want reviewed, their wishes will “trump” the process. Weigand added that the board would also have the ability to make suggestions for policy review on a case by case issue.

Valley asked that the board contact her to indicate policies to be reviewed, and she would then check with other districts’ and the School Board association to find out what other districts are doing.

By her comments, I came to understand that it wasn’t as important to her what the Board in West Bend thinks, but is concerned with what is done elsewhere.

I wonder what the local taxpayers think of those priorities.

Valley stated she does not want policies from the board telling how to run the district. According to district administration, the board operates “over” and not “under” the line. In other words, the board is to set policy for the administration to use in writing “rules”. Randy Marquardt, board president, wants policies to be general and “guiding”. Dave Weigand stated he wants “the board to make the intent clear” in policy.

This seems a minor difference, but in practice it is a major issue. In looking over some older policies, I noticed that the past boards have clearly written their intent and even steps to follow in policy. I sense a recent shift in where the real authority lies, and that shift is not moving toward the elected board.

After discussing policy 370, Weigand moved on to policy 333 regarding “passive permission” for activities in the district. Weigand argued that an “opt in” and not an “opt out” would be more appropriate for activities such as surveys, etc. “We want parents to have opportunity to opt in rather opt out”, giving parents true authority over their minor children.

He further stated that the way it is now is “reversed”. Weigand also said that the Cedarburg School District has an opt-in procedure for human growth and development courses.

Randy Marquardt agreed “on certain issues”. He also stated he has, “no problem endorsing that kind of change.”

Weigand charged Valley, as administrative liaison, to work on the suggested changes to the two mentioned policies.

Valley also mentioned a policy proposal from board member Bart Williams about “truth in disclosure for referendum”. More details will be forthcoming as the board looks into this-hopefully-as the board engages in activities they were elected to do.

Packer Victory Packs Punch

Had a spectacular time at the Packer's opening game against the Saints last night. Biggest crowd I've encountered in the times I've been at Lambeau (I'm sure there've been more). Stage shows were Maroon 5, Kid Rock and Lady Antebellum. Big screens were all over the place, so if you couldn't get real close to the stage area, or didn't want to get real close, you could enjoy the shows just the same. The crowd was electrifying and the game was fired up....all the way from the first touch down only minutes into the game, through Cobbs' phenomenal field-length run to a touchdown, and a final victory.

We had a great audience participation stunt that I got some video of below. Everyone had a bag with a large folded cardboard sign in it duct-taped to their seat. Yes, each and every seat had one of these.... Instructions for the stunt were on the actual cardboard sign, so each Packer fan would know exactly what to do, and when to do it. There were two stunt times, and each side of the cardboard sign was to be used once. The result is below. It was phenomenal... How did they do that, anyway? Perfect points on the stars, curves on the lettering..... Fabulous time.

All 4 State Reps, LaMehieu, Strachota, Pridemore and Knodl have confirmed attendance.  Other State and Federal elected officials may also attend.  Dan LaMehieu, who's district now includes Hartford; Don Pridemore, who lost Hartford but adds Richfield, Hubertus, Colgate, part of Germantown and M-Falls, Pat Strachota, who's district expand southward and Dan Knodl, the Republican Caucus Chair who's district was also adjusted.  That is why I put new in quotes.  These are our heroes working for us in the State Assembly so I hope everyone can attend and thank them for all their hard work. Local Resident Bullied for Participating in Dane County Fair

We would expect nothing less from liberal rag Wisconsin State Journal:

A part-time nurse from West Bend, Wisconsin, set up an interactive creation-based booth with a sign reading "Interpret the Evidence" at a local county fair. TheWisconsin State Journal reported on Mary Weigand's booth with the headline "Creationist seeks to debunk scientific fact at Dane County Fair."¹ But was she actually trying to debunk "scientific fact," or was this headline just a mudslinging smear?

By examining fossils on display, booth attendees investigated for themselves whether or not fossils show a gradual transition between life forms, as Darwinism predicts. The booth presented an alternative scientific explanation that appears to fit the fossil data much better. Each visitor was left to discern whether fossils show discrete created kinds with no undisputed transitions between forms, as biblical creation predicts.

The claim that this booth is attempting "to debunk scientific fact" is apparently a shallow slander. Instead, it looks as though Weigand and her sponsors actually promote just the opposite approach: Encouraging people to do better science by interpreting hard evidence using common sense, instead of relying on the dogmatic propaganda that is necessary to prop up evolution's failed paradigm.

A piece of Heaven in Fox Lake - Mullin's

If you're ever near Fox Lake and in need of some good eats, pass through, but don't pass BY this drive-in. Mullin's Drive-In is everything "old school," including superior car-hop service, pleasant employee interaction, great food/ice cream treats, root beer mugs, and a surprising bit of entertainment extraordinaire.

Our family has seen this corner restaurant over the years, but never had the pleasure (or proper timing) of dropping in for a bite; we sure missed out!

Mullin's car hops are youthful teen-through-college-age men and women that stand at the ready when patrons pull in. Customer service works like a well-oiled machine. Prompt, extremely courteous, and well-trained are adjectives that hardly do justice to the employees of Mullin's. The menu is brief, but broad enough to suit everyone's tastes. I had the sloppy joe, which tasted homemade and came piping hot in a basket. My daughter had an old-fashioned burger with the works and loved it. Onion ring and fry portions are generous here, and the sweet-tooth specialty is Schoep's fresh ice cream.

The parking is limited, so it's probably best to go just after the noon rush, or before the dinner hour. The property hosts a small park-like atmosphere with plush grass, mature trees, and picnic tables that include a thoughtful touch - a fly swatter for pest-free dining. :-)

Customers were kept amused by today's "bus boy" - a young man with calf muscles the size of a football who watchfully waited for picnic tables to clear, then dashed, I mean like REALLY RAN, to the table, grabbed off food baskets with trash, wiped down in 5 seconds, then dashed back to the shelter to dump trash and return. Each table was cleared in record time, and it was a rather comical surprise to unsuspecting diners.

The advertisement on-line boasts clean bathrooms, and they are absolutely spot on with that claim. All employees greeted customers both in cars and on the grounds with friendly hellos, and "thanks for coming", as well as "hope to see you again soon"...

If you're looking for low-cal, low-fat choices, this won't be the place for you. However, if you want a great flashback with the fam, I highly recommend this jewel of Fox Lake.

TAR HEEL, N.C. — The races for mayor and three commission seats are wide open in the small North Carolina town of Tar Heel — because no one bothered to run.
No one has registered as a candidate for the fall elections in the Bladen County town. The story was first reported by WECT-TV.
The ballots will be printed with blank spaces for voters to write in their choices.
Current Mayor Ricky Martin says he's not surprised no one wants the jobs. Even in a town of 117, it's hard work with little compensation. And Martin says state budget cuts mean the next elected officials might have to raise taxes.
Cynthia Shaw, the director of the county's board of elections, says it's the first time she has seen an entire town without a candidate.

Spectacular parade complete with an enormous number of surrounding area fire departments, their trucks (every kind), and their personnel in sharp uniform. Lots of veterans and flags and people shouting thanks. Candy being thrown in giant handfuls, leaving no child unsugared. The local Klotz's Piggly Wiggly outdid themselves with employees (?) pushing shopping carts filled with tons of giveaways, such as recyclable shopping bags, plastic water bottles, candy, and more! Farm equipment, horses, dancers, music....

The 1-1/2 hour long parade on this perfect summer day delighted the hundreds of attendees.

A celebration of freedom, and a display of gratefulness and thanks.

HARTFORD — The first thing Bill Savage is hoping for when he takes a fundraising bike ride from the steps of the state Capitol in Madison to the Hartford Pregnancy Help Center on July 13 is to raise a lot of money.

Laura Denk, executive director of the Hartford Pregnancy Help Center which will receive the proceeds from Savage’s ride this year, said she waited out Schimp and Savage even after sending volunteers home.

Together the two bike riders raised about $1,200 for the center, which was started by Don and Lois Ehley in 1993. Denk started with the organization about 11 years ago. The center runs on an annual budget of about $50,000 and has 22 volunteers.

HATA has unofficially adopted the pregnancy center as an organization it supports because it fits in well with the spirit of HATA, Savage said.

“They don’t use government money, taxpayer money,” Savage said. “They rely on donations and private sources.”

The center serves about 70 to 80 clients per month (78 last month) and offers counseling and classes for everything from miscarriage, newborn death, pregnancy, abortion recovery counseling for women and men, parenting classes to sexual integrity classes (purity and abstinence).

One thing the clinic doesn’t offer is abortion services.

“In the 11 years I’ve done it, I’ve seen so many women harmed by abortion,” Denk said. “We also counsel the men. It has always been our position that it is very harmful to the baby, but also to the mother and father.”

That mission appeals to Savage and other members of the conservative watchdog group.

A View for the Fourth Fireworks in West Bend

I was glad this story appeared in the WBDN today. We have been sitting on this hill for the last 3-4 years and it is so much less congested than Riverside. The view is spectacular and you can see some of the ground fireworks, but honestly, it's the best place to be. I'm usually responsible for a giant batch of home-made popcorn (buttered, of course), plus napkins! My son and his wife/family arrive early and save us a place, though truthfully, there is so much room on this hill that everyone wins.

A good view of the rockets red, white and blue glare is free Monday night at the Fourth of July Celebration on the Hill behind the Senior Center in West Bend.

The Senior Center, 401 E. Washington St., is on the Washington County campus and while it’s a block north of the city’s Riverside Park, which hosts West Bend’s annual fireworks display, it’s higher elevation offers a good view of the aerial extravaganza.

“It’s directly behind our building,” said Karen Lewis, volunteer coordinator for the Senior Citizens Activities Inc., which operates the Senior Center in West Bend. “People can come here and sit on the hill and watch the fireworks. This is probably the fifth year we’ve done this.”

And it’s a viewing area where you won’t have to fight the crowd for a place to sit.

School Board Members Sets the Record STRAIGHT

Serious inaccuracies by Mark Peterson (June 17) and others regarding my June 13 School Board vote not to recognize the Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) as a student group compel me to set the record straight. The acoustics in Badger Middle School’s cafeteria were a challenge for that meeting, but newspaper and TV reporters correctly relayed what I said.

This issue existed for several years and predates my board service, which just began in April. I was out of town and could not vote when the issue was first considered on May 9, resulting in a 3-3 tie, status quo and the GSA not recognized. Three days later, the GSA filed a lawsuit.

I have numerous reasons why I opposed recognition of the GSA.

1. It’s unnecessary. In a May 13 email to the board and three administrators, Shana Schloemer (signed it as “unofficial Co-advisor of GSA”) stated, “We would not need a GSA at all if there weren’t people who discriminated against or harassed people whose sexual attraction or identity is different than ‘mainstream’.” Our district already has anti-harassment and anti-bullying policies in place. The administration is doing its best to enforce them.

2. The GSA isn’t as tolerant as it claims. I received numerous emails from people who identified themselves as GSA members or supporters. Many of these emails were disrespectful and harassing, calling me terrible names/labels. Because I hadn’t voted on May 9 or responded to any of these emails, these people didn’t know how I would’ve voted, yet they pre-judged me based on something other than facts – the very essence of prejudice. Names, labels and personal opinions appear throughout Ms. Schloemer’s e-mail, although she’s supposed to be setting a good example for GSA students.

3. Many activities advocated by the GSA do/would constitute a distraction from what our District’s true goal should be – to provide the very best possible education, given what our community can afford/support, for all our students to most effectively compete in the 21st century global economy.

The GSA wants to organize and/or participate in 16 days of in-school activities annually. If all 33 student groups do that, 528 days are needed, almost triple our 180 school days.

For “Day of Silence,” the GSA wants students to duct tape their mouths during school. Exercising vigorously in gym, playing a brass or woodwind instrument or giving a comprehensive response to a complex math, English, social studies or science question, etc., with duct tape over your mouth is difficult if not dangerous. Education is supposed to be interactive, but the more duct-taped-mouth students don’t participate, the larger the burden on other students.

4. Such distractions hurt education and are a disservice to our students because U.S. education as a whole is losing ground. We’re ranked in the 20s globally in math and science; we used to be No. 1. Other countries’ students attend more school days per year (Japan 243, South Korea 220, U.S. 180) with longer school days (e.g., South Korea – 8 hours; ours – 6.5-7 hours).

5. Money is available for the lawsuit. I found $655,000 of administrative reductions (i.e., no teacher cuts). Since this wasn’t in the preliminary budget the prior Board passed, much of it’s still available.

I’m skeptical of those supporting tax-to-max budgets, tax-increase referenda, etc., yet say we have no money for the lawsuit. Many parents contacted me threatening to pull their kids out of our district if we keep letting distractions diminish quality education, potentially losing us hundreds of thousands of dollars every year in revenue. Few factor this into the decision’s total cost.

It’s unfortunate that instead of advancing public understanding and dialogue on this key issue with a well-reasoned, rigorous argument, Mr. Mark Peterson resorts to name-calling (e.g., “zealots,” “vanity,” comparing me to a cartoon character, etc.) and serious departures from the facts. Let’s hope he doesn’t do that in class, where students pay good money for instruction and deserve better.

Spent Saturday strolling Strawberry Festival in Cedarburg. It certainly cannot be complained that attendance was anything less than impressive. The streets were overflowing with young and old, walkers and strollers, wheelchairs and wagons. The weather was more than cooperative at a warm mid-80-degree range. If you aren't in a hurry, the crowds won't be too intimidating. What I like about this festival is that the booths are juried, and whoever does the selecting finds the most unique and intriguing vendors. The jewelry artisans displayed enticing pieces that had women packing out the booth. I noted that feather-weaving in the hair was a popular (if not up and coming) fashion. Every few seconds there were wafts of brats, burgers, gyros, kettle corn (which we were informed can now be purchased at Sendik's) to entice the palate.

We settled on sharing a strawberry brat, only to be disappointed by the lack of flavor and mushy texture - our only disappointment of the event. We made up for it with a bag of kettle corn, my husband's favorite. :-)

There were some interesting bird feeders that were coconuts fashioned into fish. Artists showed impressive talents and it was eye candy just to stop and gaze at the different media offered throughout the festival streets.

Bullied, and Misled - West Bend Families Were Duped

The citizens of West Bend and the school district board members have been misled.

Recommendations from two law firms regarding the legal battle against school sponsorship of a Gay/Straight Alliance (GSA) were biased and heavily weighted in favor of the GSA. The District may as well have hired local drum-beater Waring Fincke. Have we forgotten that 1.26 million people in the state of Wisconsin cast their vote to secure one man/one woman marriage? The message across the state is clear - the majority of our state supports this decision, the majority of Washington County supports it as well, and the majority of our school district should be represented accordingly. A mere 30 students who are being led by a local sex therapist and an openly gay high school teacher do not trump the wishes of the majority. The GSA's rabid attorney who uses his credentials to bully those whom he disagrees with appears to hold himself in high esteem in our city. He can be seen organizing anti-Grothman events, leading high school and college kids along our streets like the pied piper, bullhorn in hand, instigating, intimidating, and, in the opinion of many, verbally abusing citizens through word and deed.

Most recently, the West Bend School District board members rescinded a vote taken that maintained the GSA as an after-school club. The rescind of this vote was brought forward due to the scare tactics of Fincke and his GLSEN attorney friend. The revote came on the heels of a so-called recommendation from two law firms that clearly sided with Fincke; both were chosen by Supt. Ted Neitzke, and both were approved by board president, Randy Marquardt.

On the outside, the law firms appear harmless. The first opinion was obtained from Mary Hubacher who is already on staff with the District as our paid legal defense. Hubacher has given the appearance of bias in past issues regarding traditional family and liberal sexual issues. The second recommendation came from Milwaukee law firm Quarles and Brady, who openly state their support and advocacy for homosexual issues on their website.

How then, one might ask, could our school board have obtained the necessary supportive information from an attorney who would represent the majority of the board, and the taxpayers of West Bend? Indeed. In obtaining legal advice from Quarles and Brady, Neitzke showed his heavy hand towards solidifying the inclusion of the GSA in our school-sponsored clubs. Without digging into the background of this firm that strongly advocates homosexuality, one would most likely never know this was the case. It seems our District was not given the opportunity to receive legal advice from a law firm that supported their initial decision. They were simply handed the statements from two apparent pro-homosexual, anti-family entities and expected to gulp it down.

A rescind of this vote should be called for. A revote should be insisted upon. Our school district should insist on equal representation and supportive legal advice for the taxpayers and parents of our West Bend School District. Though the cost factor can also lead to a fiscal intimidation factor, let's remember that once we allow the bully in, more will follow.

The word “sacrifice” is often used in a wildly exaggerated fashion (for some of us, it’s a “sacrifice” to lose cable for a day), but those who make very real and sometimes ultimate sacrifices are some of the reasons that the rest of us are in the enviable position of being able to consider something as trivial as losing cable to be a sacrifice.

Most of us have been touched in some way by the loss of these heroes — be they family or friends. Among them, for my family, is my cousin, Steve, who was killed in Vietnam.

There was a nice write-up in the Lansing (Michigan) State Journal yesterday about him that I wanted to share. Here’s just a snippet:

Sometimes in life, you get lucky enough to have a friend who makes all the difference. For Bob DiBlase of Haslett, that person was Steven Powers.
Growing up in Lansing, Bob admits he was heading down the wrong path. He was a kid with a chip on his shoulder who liked to brawl. Before school sometimes, he’d stop off on a well-known corner downtown and pick a fight with whoever was hanging out. That’s where Steven found him one day – all bloodied and scruffy.
They sort of knew each other already. Steven went to school with Bob’s older brother at Everett High School. “He grabbed me and said, ‘I’m taking you to a dance tonight. But you can’t go looking like that,’ ” Bob says.
So Steven took him to Holden-Reid, bought him some penny loafers and a button-down shirt and took him to the dance. The friendship took; Bob didn’t fight anymore after that.
“He was laid back and easy-going,” says Bob. “The girls drooled over him. We all turned into the ‘Beach Boys’ type. We were just having fun.”

Which is why it shocked the hell out of his friends when Steven enlisted in the Marines after high school. It was 1966. Everyone knew what was happening in Vietnam. But Steven was determined to go.
He was assigned to C Company, 1st Battalion of the 9th Marine Regiment, Third Marine Division. Public records don’t indicate when his tour started, but on May 14, 1967, he was wounded and received the Purple Heart.
He came home, healed up and was sent back to Vietnam. A few weeks later, he was killed.

A very special thank-you as well to all those who are currently serving or have served so that we may remain free. From my family, that includes my father, an Air Force veteran; my uncle Steve, a retired Air Force Colonel, pilot and Vietnam veteran; and another cousin, Mike, who is a 1990 Air Force Academy grad who has served in the Middle East, Africa and Japan, among other places, and is still on active duty.

Freedom is a little like oxygen — it can be easy to take for granted until you start to lose it. A society that waits until it’s gasping and turning blue to realize that can’t remain free for long, so Memorial Day is an opportunity to take a deep breath and appreciate the fresh air we enjoy, thank these heroes, and to pledge to see to it that their sacrifices were not in vain. This is a valuable service that even those of us who never served can provide, and it’s the least we can do.

Today is the day we “officially” remember and thank all those who have given their lives in our country’s service, but, as Ted Nugent wrote in theWashington Times, we should strive to make every day Memorial Day.

The Republican-controlled Wisconsin Senate voted 19 to 5 along party lines to concur in a state Assembly bill approved earlier in May also along party lines. Most Senate Democrats did not cast votes on the proposal. It requires voter identification in polling places and eliminates straight ticket voting among other provisions.
"Requiring photo identification to vote will go a long way to eliminate the threat of voter fraud," Walker said in a statement. "If you need an ID to buy cold medicine, it's reasonable to require it to vote."

DO ACTIVIST GROUPS BELONG IN OUR SCHOOLS?

There has been recent movement in the West Bend School District to allow the Gay/Straight Alliance school club status. (current clubs and school policy are listed below)

Since schools are part of our community, and citizens are compelled to fund them for educating the children of the community, I thought I’d do some research to find out more about the group that wants to be a school sanctioned club. Their website (found by doing a Google.com search) was the most logical place to begin. I was looking for compelling evidence that this group fits in with the educational goals of the local schools.

If the GSA is granted club status, they will have daily access to all children attending the schools. In the meeting on Monday May 9^th they said they were a “support group” and that they did not support bullying in the schools.

Let’s take a look at what I found.

GSA DENIED Co-Curricular Status at West Bend High Schools

In short, there were about 100 people or so (I didn't count, but it may have been more) after all the sports awards were given out and that large group of people left. Atty. Patrykus gave a very unconvincing speech about how the District is going to get sued and THEY will be getting money in THEIR pockets if the GSA is denied co-curricular, taxpayer-funded status. Both the Mom and Dad of the GSA's president spoke to the board in favor. Then I spoke. Then Atty. Waring Fincke did his spiel and threw his weight around with the "you're going to get sued if you don't approve this" speech.

Next, someone had asked that Dave Weigand recuse himself from the vote (I think it was Patrykus, but not sure) as he already had an established opinion. Without going into all the details, that was nixed (to their credit) by all the board members EXCEPT FOR TODD MILLER. All members (with the exception of the absent Williams) voted tonight.

Conversation across the board was:

Kris Beaver is terrified of the bullies and basically stated so. He was going to vote to approve simply based on fear of Fincke and Patrykus's legal threats.

Randy Parks has a son who is in the GSA and stated in the work session that he was in favor of the club being co-curricular. If there was anyone who should have recused himself, this would have been the one to ask if that was the criteria we are using.

Todd Miller acted like he had an axe to grind all night. He voted for the club because, well, because.

Board member Randy Marquardt made it clear that he did not appreciate being told by the attorneys that they had to approve this club or they would get sued. He did not feel they were in violation of any statutes or laws, and did not agree with the attorneys. He also said that that curricular and policy ties were a stretch to make them fit to the GSA, and he did not agree that the GSA fit the policy for a co-curricular. With that said, the three conservative board members did what their constituents were confident they would do. They were represented to the fullest with the NAY vote for a school-sponsored GSA.

Much appreciation to Randy Marquardt, Tim Stepanski and Dave Weigand who stood firm in their representation of our conservative school district.

Gay Club Activities for West Bend High Schools Include Educating Teachers?

One would really think this endeavour is more along the lines of a college club. High school children are still minors. Parents remain in authority and have the final say.

The GSA's application states they propose the following activities for our West Bend kids:

Educate yourselves. Is this what you want to use your taxpayer dollars for in our local high school?

The results could be disastrous.

Atty. Waring Fincke thinks he can prove discrimination if this club is denied access as a taxpayer-funded club. Perhaps he hasn't read THIS yet.

Local Attorney Fincke Bullies West Bend School District on Behalf of Gay Club

It appears that local attorney, Waring Fincke, is using his legal credentials to BULLY the school district.

And I'm curious...who authorized the Gay/Straight Alliance to use the West Bend High Schools as part of their formal name?

Though the group insists they won't be paying their volunteers or ask for taxpayer funds, who's to say they won't in the future? And how will you be able to stop them? Too late!

They're making curricular ties with PSYCH and SOCIOLOGY? This is extremely weak, if not laughable. The mention is specifically of the institution of a "marriage" aspect for the Sociology class in which students "debate the impact a non-traditional marriage has on the different levels of commitment within a society." This comes after a long six-month endeavor to solidify the Human Growth and Development curriculum for our students that strictly adheres to the state law regarding marriage as legally recognized as between one man and one woman in the state of Wisconsin. What message would this send if the District would decide to approve such a club?

As for the legalities of approval versus denies, Fincke is just plain wrong. The District does not have to include a gay club as a co-curricular. For all intents and purposes, we could link just about any human behavior to Psych and Sociology, i.e., West Bend High School Sodomy Supporters. Yes, this is JUST THAT RIDICULOUS.

Write to your local school board members. Ask them to stop the madness.

SCHLOEMER Pushing for GSA as TAXPAYER-FUNDED Sex Club in West Bend Schools

Shana Schloemer (GLBTQ sex therapist out of Cedarburg), a resident of West Bend, has decided our schools need a Gay Straight Alliance club - and evidently wants the taxpayers to pay for it.

Schloemer, whose claim to fame is the Safe Space for Washington County (a refuge she proclaims to offer for homosexuals in the community), is putting out the word on her Facebook, as well as West Bend's CandlelightCollective's Facebook to organize a MOB to show up at the school board work session on Monday, as well as the school board meeting directly following where the GSA will have "their" attorney (evidently this would be Dan Patrykus - same guy that tried to get the Grothman thank-you card shut down) speak on "their" behalf. I'm sure he'll throw out scare tactics like "I'll sic the ACLU on you" and "I'll sue you for discrimination" or some other lefty flap.

Ah yes, the infamous West Bend attorneys. Deters, Fincke, and Patrykus (uses his law office as a recall center for Sen. Grothman). Not necessarily in that order, and not necessarily at one law firm. Just three oddballs on the liberal fringe.

Then we have KRISTIN PEKOLL getting in the act ( can't say I haven't been reminding you again and again of her agenda for our youth).

And, surprise, surprise- MICHAEL TYREE, West Bend's very own former library director. IMAGINE THAT.

West Bend School District's Kathy Zarling, Administrator of Pupil Services, has apparently rewritten the co-curricular policy to try to weasel this sex club into our schools.

Instead, maybe all co-curriculars should undergo some scrutiny. Perhaps, in light of the needs to trim the budget, we should only allow those clubs that have direct ties to the academics be funded by the taxpayers. All others can stand on their own as after-school and student-led. Really. They'll be okay. Promise.

Please mark your calendars for Monday, May 9th to support the West Bend High Schools Gay Straight Alliance being discussed before the Board Of Instruction! I will give time and location details later, but should be afternoon/evening. We need LOTS of support to get the GSA official club status.   Shana Dunn Schloemer We are actually planning to have ONLY our attorney speak. The opposing side who will show up will say all kinds of ridiculous, hate filled, homophobic things and hide it behind religion. We are not going to start a verbal assault. Just a peaceful show of support with our lawyer speaking so don't be surprised to not see any of us piping up. :)

  Michael Tyree Thanks for the clarification. I'm just going to offer moral, emotional and spiritual support. Hatred hiding behind the veil of religion sickens me. There's a big difference between sanctified and sanctimonious, though that logic seems to be lost on many people in our community.

Dear Sen. Grothman and Rep. Strachota,

Thank you for coming to Jackson tonight to take part in the West Bend School District's "work session" for the School Board. As you may not have previously known, tonight was also the last night for outgoing board president Joe Carlson. I realize you were invited to this work session to discuss the changes taking place with the state budget that you have boldly supported on behalf of the majority of conservative taxpayers throughout Wisconsin. It was hoped that you would be able to share your ideas and suggestions in order to lend support to our local school board.

I'm sure you didn't expect to be taken hostage by our Superintendent, Pat Herdrich, our soon-to-be dethroned board president, Joe Carlson, and Kewaskum schoolteacher/board member Kris Beaver, who all repeatedly addressed both of you by your first names (though Carlson was sure to state "Dr." Herdrich when pertinent) and raised their voices angrily at you. Numerous times you were harshly demanded to come up with figures that were not yet determinable. Over and over again the condescending nature of the conversation was aimed at you until finally board vice president Tim Stepanski said enough was enough.

As if the bait-and-switch agenda for the evening wasn't enough, our local liberal recall election king, Waring Fincke, was front and center, and was aided by a young high school student who was trying her best to look intimidating with her video camera aimed on Sen. Grothman. The recall renegades were disruptively commenting as both of you tried to answer questions that were already rude and discourteous. What was worse, they followed you out of the room at the end of the meeting and waved signs in your faces and chanted, which prompted a police escort. I would never have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. A police escort for our State Senator and Representative in order to safely leave a School Board Work Session at Jackson Elementary School!

I am terribly embarrassed by the representation of the people on the school board who disrespected you, downplayed your positions, and mocked you to a waiting crowd. It felt like a set-up. Perhaps it was. I know there are other school board members who did not appreciate what took place. It is not representative of the people in our school district - the ones who know what you stand for and support you 100%.

Our new school board members bring a refreshing new outlook and a positive attitude. Our superintendent has one foot out the door as she seeks employment in a neighboring district. The tide is turning in West Bend, and it is a deep breath of fresh air.

Your input is valuable and your dedication is admirable. You have endured much and it has not gone unnoticed.

My apologies, once again, for this evening's untoward outcome.

God bless your time and efforts as you go forward in Wisconsin.

Homeschoolers are being asked to pilot the program to draw homeschooled kids into the program and increase revenue.

$6400 per capita for online academy versus $6800 paid out for opted out students. Academy will generate revenue. Sounds like another charter school offering in the recent past that was rejected because it was not "innovative." This academy is no more innovative. Interestingly, I don't hear Beaver or Miller chiming in with their barrage of curriculum and innovation questions.
